Candle Safety

The following guidelines will help reduce your risk when burning candles at home:

- Always adhere to the instructions provided on the label.
- Trim candle wicks to a height of 5-7 mm (1/4 inch) before lighting. Remember to trim them every 2-3 hours to keep flames at a safe height.
- Exercise caution when burning multi-wick candles. Avoid candles with closely spaced multiple wicks.
- Choose well-ventilated, sturdy candle holders that won't tip over. Steer clear of wooden or plastic holders, as they pose a fire hazard. Be careful with glass holders, which may shatter if overheated.
- Never toss objects, such as matches, into candles.
- Keep burning candles away from flammable materials like curtains, decorations, and clothing. If your clothing catches fire, remember to "Stop, Drop, and Roll."
- Ensure burning candles are out of reach of children and pets.
- Never leave candles burning unattended.
- Always extinguish all candles before going to bed.
- Avoid burning candles with lead in their wicks. When purchasing, ask the retailer if the wicks contain lead.
- If you have children under five, refrain from using decorative oil lamps with liquid fuel. If you do use them, store the fuel securely out of sight and reach. If you suspect your child has ingested liquid fuel, contact your local poison control center immediately.
- Educate your children about the dangers of open flames. Make sure they understand that candles are not toys and should not be eaten or drunk.
